Your Business Won’t Outgrow Your Leaders

Are you growing people or just managing them?

If you own or lead a trades business, you already know this…

You can tighten up your processes, you can track more KPIs, you can invest in better software, trucks, tools, and tech…

And still feel like your company has hit a ceiling.

More often than not, that ceiling isn’t your systems. It’s not the economy or the job market. It’s not the market opportunity.

It’s your leaders… And sometimes, the ceiling is you.

The Hidden Ceiling in Trades Businesses

In the trades, we promote our best techs, estimators, and project managers into leadership roles because they’re rock solid at what they do.

They know the work. Customers love them. They deliver.

So we hand them a team and a title and hope they’ll figure out the people part along the way.

Here’s where things break down: managing schedules, quoting jobs, and solving technical problems is not the same thing as leading humans.

That’s when the ceiling starts to show up:

  • Strong individual contributors who struggle to manage others
  • Frustration, blame, and silos across departments
  • Owners getting pulled into every decision and fire
  • Managers who don’t know how to coach or develop people, so they just manage tasks

You can feel it in your gut…

The business won’t keep growing if your people don’t.

“Work Me” vs. “Home Me”: A 90-Day Shift That Changed Everything

One of the GMs currently enrolled in our Maximize Your Impact virtual series shared this with me recently:

“I’ve always known that work and personal life blend together, but I thought I could compartmentalize.
At work I’m firm, task-oriented, assertive. At home, I’m softer, more compassionate, more fun.
This series made me realize that I’m still the same person in both places. How I lead is how I live.
It’s made me more aware of how I show up, not just as a manager, but as a human.
And that’s changed everything.”

That’s what real growth looks like. Not another dashboard. Not another app. Not another meeting. How you show up matters, everywhere! That’s what removes the ceiling.

A leader who realizes, “I don’t have a work version and a home version of me. I just have… me.”

That’s kind of self-awareness that removes the ceiling.

Professional Development Is Self Development

Here’s what I believe: Professional development is self development.

You don’t become a better leader by memorizing scripts or collecting tactics. You become a better leader by becoming a better version of yourself…

  • More self-aware
  • More emotionally intelligent
  • More intentional about your impact
  • More willing to have the conversations you’ve been avoiding

That’s the work most owners and managers put off, not because they don’t care, but because they’re overwhelmed, busy, and no one’s ever shown them how. But your business will never outgrow the current version of your leaders.

Growing leaders who grow people who grow companies isn’t a slogan. It’s the strategy.

A Quick Gut Check for the Next 90 Days

Before you think about “fixing” your managers or sending someone to training, start with yourself.

Take five quiet minutes and ask:

  1. What’s one personal goal I’m committed to elevating this year?
(Not for the business. For you.)

  2. What’s one leadership goal I want to grow into this year?
(Not revenue. Not call volume. You.)

  3. What’s likely to get in the way?

    • Time?

    • Old habits?

    • Fear of slowing down long enough to actually grow?

These are the kinds of questions we ask inside my leadership development programs.
You can even bring them into your next one-on-one with a manager.

That alone can shift the tone of your leadership conversations.

Because here’s the truth:

If your people are the ones who will hit your goals, what are you actively doing to grow them this quarter?

“Waiting until things slow down” is not a strategy.

What We’re Launching in March (and Who It’s For)

In March, I’m kicking off a 90-day virtual leadership series built specifically for the trades.

Who it’s for:

  • Owners who know they need to grow themselves

  • GMs, service managers, and department leads promoted for technical skill, not people leadership

  • Companies with 20–200 employees facing real culture and communication growing pains

Over 90 days, we’ll focus on:

  • Self-awareness and mindset

  • What it means to lead people, not just manage tasks

  • Communication, feedback, and trust

  • The daily behaviors that build—or break—culture

It’s capped at 12 seats so we can go deep, move fast, and make it personal.

If you’re thinking, “I need this for myself,” or “My managers aren’t ready for next year the way they are now,” this is for you.

I’d love to connect with you to talk about whether this 90-day series is the right fit for you, or someone on your team.

If this has been nudging at you, this is your invitation to book a 30-minute discovery call with me, just click here

Because your business will only grow as far as your leaders are willing to.

And your people won’t grow if you’re not willing to go first.
